Awarded First Place ($200)
Problem
With the rising cost of living and insufficient funding for subsidized food outlets on UBC’s campus as well as the stigma surrounding food banks/donations, students are failing to receive the food-related assistance they so desperately need. Our team is trying to find a solution that destigmatizes food sharing and curbs rampant food waste.
Solution
Our solution to this problem is a gamified meal sharing app that gives students the option to stay anonymous to destigmatize meal donations while also rewarding donors with gift cards and vouchers to assist with grocery bills.
User Research
In order to further understand our user’s needs, we conducted user interviews with UBC students in addition to polling friends on Instagram using Likert Scales. We determined a list of questions, both quantitative and qualitative, in order to understand different domains of user experience we needed to address.
On a scale of 1-10, how comfortable would you feel to receive free produce or meals from another student at UBC? – Instagram Likert scale survey
On a scale of 1-10, how comfortable would you feel to give excess produce or meals to another student at UBC? – Instagram Likert scale survey
Do you know anyone who has struggled with meal budgeting?

Challenges
As someone who doesn’t really trust someone else with their food, I got a feeling that I would always be worried about eating other people’s food. We will be looking more into the features that makes user more secure and safely receive food
Improvements
We would be doing more research on UBC Food Bank, and would try to improve in the UI/UX to make it more student centered. We are also planning to launch the app to update.
